World Bank reaches $82 billion funding for International Development Association
The International Development Association is a financial institution and part of the World Bank. It provides concessional loans and grants to the developing regions of the world to boost economic growth and scale down inequalities.
Last month, a number of development partner countries announced in Stockholm that they are committed to provide funding up to $82 billion to the IDA, out of which $53 billion targets African countries.
The funding supports projects in the following areas:
- investing in essential health, nutrition, and population services
- enhanced access to broadband internet
- immunizations for up to 140 million children
- improving governance
- increasing renewable energy generation capacity
- enhancing debt sustainability and transparency
- harnessing and adapting to transformative digital payment technology
- promoting inclusion of those living with disabilities
- strengthening the rule of law
- investing in human capital
The IDA’s funding is allocated every third year, making this commitment to cover the period between 1 July 2020 and 30 June 2023. This funding will help the recipient countries tackle the challenges of climate change, create jobs and support investments in quality infrastructure and regional integration.
