European Union - African Union summit

European Union - African Union summit
18 February 2022

During this week, on 17 (Thursday) and 18 (Friday) February, the sixth European Union – African Union summit has been taking place, where the leaders of the EU and of the African Union (AU), as well as the Heads of State of their respective member states, meet in Brussels to debate several topics.

The European countries have been presenting projects related to prosperity, security and mobility. The EU has crafted these projects in close collaboration with African countries to address African expectations regarding investment, infrastructure, health, mobility, security and education.

This summit presents a unique opportunity to strengthen the foundations for a renewed and deeper AU-EU partnership with common aims and a clear understanding of mutual benefits for building greater prosperity.

The main goal of this summit is to launch an ambitious Africa-Europe package, focused on global challenges such as climate change and the current health crisis, as well as to promote a renewed peace and security plan for stability and security. The heads of state of both EU and AU countries participated alongside a selected group of external experts in different fields.

The main topics that have been debated are:

  • Financial growth
  • Health systems and vaccine production
  • Agriculture and sustainable development
  • Education, culture, and vocational training
  • Migration and mobility
  • Private sector support and economic integration
  • Peace, security and governance
  • Climate change and green/digital transition
