USA sanctions against Iran

USA sanctions against Iran
04 October 2022

Similarly to the EU, who is stepping up its efforts to crack down on circumvention of sanctions against Russia, the US has decided to do the same to Iran regarding their aircrafts entering into Russia.

The U.S Commerce Department, through its Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has added an updated list of aircrafts that have flown into Russia in apparent violation of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).

In the last few weeks, the U.S Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has pointed to four Iranian cargo planes for flying into Russia in apparent violation of US export controls on Russia. According to the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Enforcement, Matthew S. Axelrod, on 19 September they identified three Iranian cargo planes operated by Mahan Air, Qeshm Fars Air and Iran Air having flown to Russia in an attempt to avoid their strong export controls. On 26 September, the US Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) identified a fourth Iranian cargo plane flying to Russia, owned by Saha Airlines, which itself is owned by the Iranian Air Force providing cargo flight services.

Now a total of 184 aircraft have been identified on the list for apparent violations of U.S export controls.
